So I am in the middle of a LOT of books right now and a little behind in writing (please don’t hate me, it’s been crazy over here). Recently, I finished listening to the sequel to this book Beautiful Darkness and thought it’d be interesting to touch base on the original book, Beautiful Creatures. I remember when it first came out and then the movie came to follow. The movie, in my opinion, was absolutely dreadful. It goes right up there with The Mortal Instruments film.

The book follows the story of sixteen-year-old Ethan Wate in Gatlin, South Carolina. Like any small town, Gatlin has more negatives than positives. Civilians still relive and celebrate the Battle Between the States, the main store in the town is located at a gas station , and newcomers rarely visit due to ill treatment from the citizens. Lena Duchaanes, a strange new girl, comes to town and her entrance practically turns this little town upside down.

Ethan is not the normal type of boy in a small town. His mother passed due to mysterious circumstances, leaving his father in an endless cycle of barely leaving his study. In his stead, Ethan is raised by his family housekeeper Amma who is later revealed to be a Seer. And lately, he has been getting tired of the same old, feeling as though this is all life has to offer. That is, until Lena enters his life.

This is a new spin on star-crossed lovers only filled with Casters (other form of witches), Incubuses, Sucubuses, and many other kinds of dark creatures. The only downside is that Ethan has a habit of drowning on and on repetitiously of facts that we constantly are told. It took me almost a whole month to read it because it got tiresome to read.

Regardless, I’ve just finished the second book and continue on to many others.

My Rating: 6.5 out of 10 Book Charms
