“If I could only talk to her. If I just had the power to show myself like others do, I could convince her that she doesn’t need to grieve over me. That I don’t regret saving her life, even though it meant sacrificing my own.”
– “Kai”; Sarah Beard
I had spoken about waiting for this book in a previous post. Completely worth the wait. It is a story of love, sacrifice, and healing. You’ll need a box of tissues nearby. For a stand a lone novel, author Sarah Beard is a brilliant novelist who weaves her story by carefully revealing her characters background little by little without giving readers information overload.
The story surrounds Zackai “Kai” Turner who died trying to save a young woman named Avery Ambrose from drowning. In return for his sacrifice, he received the gift of healing those hanging in the balance between life and death. Despite things going well for him in the afterlife, he keeps track of Avery and her current life situation. Avery, unfortunately, suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) from the event and has abandoned her love of surfing, abandoned by her former boyfriend Tyler, and is constantly working at her father’s chocolate shop.
Amazon Description: “Kai met Avery only once–in the moment he died saving her life. Now when he’s not using his new healing powers to help people, he watches helplessly as Avery’s life is unraveled by his death. To help her, he risks everything by breaking the rules, dangerously blurring the barriers between life and death.”
Kai and Avery are officially relationship goals only without the guy dying by trying to save me. The fact that he is willing to put his job and access to Earth on the line in order to try to help Avery heal over his death is touching. Anytime I had to step away from this novel, a part of me felt like it was left behind in the pages.
I could not find anything wrong with this story. Even after the last page, my heart and emotions were on the edge. I usually have my iPod on as I read in order for me to focus. One particular song began to play close to the remaining few chapters. I have officially deemed it Avery and Kai’s song:
In Beyond The Rising Tide, Love has no bounds or limitations. Even in death, love shall remain and unforgotten. It is sacrificial and kind. It stands up for the hurting and comes unexpectedly. I am extremely thankful I was given the chance to review it before it is released.
